How Much Does a Fence Cost in Brunswick, GA?

The truth is nobody is going to quote your fence off of a blog post. We can let you know the ranges we have been seeing around Brunswick, what factors make jobs higher or lower in these ranges and avoid a big shock when you see a number you weren't expecting.

All of the numbers below are rough planning numbers, not prices. There is so much difference in coastal sites that the only number that matters is the one on the quote after someone has come to your property.

Fence cost is measured per linear foot

For fence the quote is based on feet of fence not square feet of your lot. Your first job is to take a tape measure or measuring wheel and walk along your property line and make some notes as to how many feet of fence you might want.

In a subdivision in Brunswick a typical quarter acre lot might require 150-250 feet to fence in a back yard depending on the coverage of your house along the perimeter. An acre fenced in on all four sides might be 800'. That is where the "how much is a fence" thing is so non-specific.

Rough installed ranges by material

This is ballpark for material and labor installed for residential standard heights. Use this as a guide only.

• Chain link: $15-$30/lf around. Cheapest fence for a yard. Still the most practical for dog runs and back yards when it's not about how it looks.
• Wood privacy: $25-$45/lf around. 6' pressure treated pine is the norm in my neck of the woods. This changes based on height, picket type and if you want a side of finish on it for the outside.
• Vinyl privacy: $35-$60/lf around. More up front than wood. Low maintenance by you.
• Aluminum ornamental: $40-$75/lf around. The upcharge for a fence you can see through. Powder coated and really does well in salt air.
• Field and farm wire: $6-$15/lf around. Acreage fencing is a different beast. You see a much lower $/lf price when you're doing long straight runs.

What actually moves your number

Gates

The biggest single undervalued item on a fence quote is the gates. Each gate is a mini-project. Need posts to support a swing weight. Hinges and latches for coastal air. Occasionally there is a drop rod. Concrete footing. Throw a few hundred dollars on there for the simple walk-gate. Four figure (or more) add for big double drive gates. It's a big deal if you put 2 gates instead of one gate.

Access

Can you get to the fence line with truck and trailer or are you doing everything through a three foot wide side gate? Old Town Brunswick's small urban lots. Or dense island roads on St. Simons. Often a lot of carry, a lot of wheelbarrowing out spoil. Not a lot of room to use a post hole auger for half the line. Labor. Much of it is labor.

Ground conditions

Local. Our dirt is sandy by the water and heavy clay by the time you get inland. Water table for marsh front or low lots can be surprisingly shallow. A water filled post hole changes the method of post hole digging and post installation. Live Oak and old pines roots, debris from building (new subdivisions), old concrete slab that got forgotten... slows things down.

Slope and obstacles

I know Glynn County is pretty flat most of it. But in a situation where you have to step down a bank or go over a drainage swale or go around a shed that's already there, that's going to be more expensive than just going straight across flat land. Removal of the old fence

Removing an existing fence and hauling it away. Can be a real pain especially if the existing fence posts are concreted in. You would want to know if the removal and disposal is included in or additional to the quote.

Where the coast adds cost, and where it saves you

Think of salt air as the local tax on bargain hardware. There's no difference between a fence 3 miles in and a fence on Sea Island. But the one on Sea Island will require fasteners, hinges, latches that aren't going to be a rust-stain in two years. You need hot-dipped galvanized, stainless or powdercoated aluminum (vs. steel) hardware. It costs more up front, but so much less over 10 years.

Consider that hurricane season is from June to November. A solid fence for privacy is a sail. Some folks in exposed locations seek a semi-private or picket type fence, or even aluminum just because it can be blown through. It's not a cheaper fence, but it may be a cheaper 10 years.

Cheap fences are usually expensive

When you're on a budget you think "less post depth, more spacing between posts, less hardware." Well in sandy coastal soil that's exactly where fences will fail. So you have one that's leaning 3 years later that you have to redo 6 years later. More expensive than the quote that was a few hundred more.

When comparing quotes, don't just look at the bottom line, ask how deep are posts, how far apart are posts, how much concrete and what is your fastener made of? Often times the same bottom line on two quotes doesn't mean the same fence.

Getting a number that means something

It needs to be able to have someone on the site. We'll look at the line, the access, the land, gate locations and what the neighbors have in place. Then you'll be able to get an actual number to plan off of. An accurate idea of places you can pinch a little here and there to save some money without regrets.
